ISLAND BAR

Pink dots

Safe Harbor Marina has always had a bar, and for years, it was the kind of place you could get a burger or a steak sandwich with a can of beer in hand—simple and no-nonsense. When Bobby and Michelle Mongelli took over, they transformed it into the Hogfish Bar & Grill. The changes are subtle yet significant. It still feels like a step back in time—like walking into a piece of Stock Island history. The black and white photos, the painted wood posts, and the tin roof all remind you of an era when the bar was a place for pool games, jukebox tunes, and the salty stories of shrimpers.

WHAT'S A HOGFISH ANYWAY?

Yellow Hogfish

Despite the name, hogfish aren’t hogs or even remotely pig-like—unless you count their snout. Named for their long, pig-like snout used to root around in the sand for food, hogfish are actually a type of wrasse, a colorful family of reef-dwelling fish. Native to the western Atlantic Ocean, especially around Florida and the Gulf of Mexico, hogfish are a prized catch for divers and anglers alike.

Besides being fascinating creatures, hogfish are also a popular seafood choice, beloved for their mild, slightly sweet flavor and flaky texture. Whether you’re a marine biology nerd or just someone who appreciates a good fish taco, the hogfish has something to offer.
